How to Make Vegan Spam with Step-By-Step Instructions

Creating vegan spam is simpler than you might think. Here’s how to do it:

Preparing the Ingredients

Start by preheating your oven to 180ºC. This makes sure the oven is at the right temperature by the time your vegan spam mixture is ready to go in.

Cooking the Base

Next, heat a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil, and once it’s hot, toss in the diced onion and minced garlic. Cook these for about 5-7 minutes until they’re soft and aromatic.

Mixing the Spices

Now, add the smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder to the skillet. This is where the flavor really starts to build. Stir everything well to combine.

Preparing the Tofu

Take your block of soft tofu and press it down to remove as much liquid as possible. Then, cut or crumble it into small pieces. This helps it to better absorb the flavors.

Blending the Mixture

Combine the tofu with your spiced onion and garlic mixture. Then, transfer everything into a food processor and process until smooth. This creates the base of your vegan spam.

Baking

Line a small loaf pan with parchment paper for easy removal. Pour the tofu mixture into the pan, pressing it down firmly. Bake it in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, then flip it over and bake for another 15 minutes. This baking step is crucial for getting the right consistency.

Cooling and Serving

After baking, let your vegan spam cool down before slicing. This wait is key for it to hold together well when cut. Now, it’s ready to be sliced and served in your favorite dishes!

Recipe Notes and Expert Tips

Here are some handy tips and additional notes to make your Vegan Spam even better:

  • Tofu Type Matters: Use a soft block of tofu for this recipe as it blends well and gives the right texture. If you prefer a firmer texture, extra-firm tofu can also be used.
  • Spice It Up: Feel free to adjust the spices according to your taste. Adding a bit of cayenne pepper can give it a nice kick.
  • Smokiness: To amp up the smoky flavor, add a teaspoon of liquid smoke to the mixture before blending it.
  • Pressing Tofu: Properly pressing the tofu is key. The less moisture in the tofu, the better it will hold its shape and absorb flavors.
  • Can I make this recipe without a food processor? While a food processor makes it easier to achieve a smooth texture, you can also mash the ingredients together in a bowl using a fork or potato masher. The texture will be more rustic but still delicious.
  • How do I know when the vegan spam is cooked through? It should be firm to the touch and slightly golden on the outside. Letting it cool will further help it firm up.

How to Store Leftover Vegan Spam

Storing your homemade vegan meat alternative correctly is important to maintain its flavor and texture. Here’s how to do it:

  • Cool Completely: Before storing, make sure your vegan spam has cooled down to room temperature.
  • Refrigeration: Place your cooled vegan spam in an airtight container. Properly stored, your vegan spam can last up to a week in the fridge.
  • Freezing: If you want to keep it for longer, vegan spam can be frozen. Wrap it tightly in cling film or a freezer-safe bag. It can be frozen for up to three months. Defrost in the refrigerator before using.

What to Serve with Vegan Spam

Wondering what to pair with your freshly made vegan pork spam? Here are some tasty ideas that will complement its flavors perfectly:

Breakfast Bonanza

For a hearty breakfast, try slicing and frying your vegan spam until it’s crispy. Serve it drizzled with maple syrup along with scrambled tofu, avocado, and whole grain toast. This combination not only tastes great but also gives you a protein-packed start to your day.

Sandwich Sensation

Create a mouth-watering sandwich by layering slices of vegan spam with fresh lettuce, tomato, and vegan cheese. Add a bit of vegan mayo or mustard for extra flavor. It’s a perfect lunch option that’s both satisfying and easy to make.

Asian-Inspired Delights

Incorporate your vegan spam into Asian dishes for an exciting twist. Dice it up and add it to fried rice, stir-fries, or noodle dishes. Its unique flavor profile blends wonderfully with soy sauce, sesame oil, and a mix of vegetables.

Vegan Spam Musubi

Embrace the flavors of Hawaii with a vegan version of Spam Musubi. Layer a slice of vegan spam on a block of sushi rice, wrap it with a nori sheet, and secure it with a dab of rice vinegar. This makes for a fun, easy, and tasty snack or appetizer.
