How to make Vegan Chocolate Coconut Mousse with Step-By-Step Instructions

A complete printable recipe and the measurements in both US customary and metric are available in the recipe card below.

Creating this vegan dessert recipe is easier than you might think, and the results are absolutely delicious. All it takes is a few simple steps:

Prep your ingredients

First, make sure you have all the necessary ingredients: full-fat coconut milk (chilled in the fridge for at least 4 hours), powdered sugar, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, and chocolate shavings for garnish.

Separate the coconut cream

Carefully open your can of coconut milk. With a spoon, scoop out the thick cream layer that’s risen to the top, leaving the liquid behind. This cream is the base of your mousse.

Whip it up

Transfer the coconut cream to a large mixing bowl or your stand mixer bowl equipped with a whisk attachment. Add in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Whip the mixture on high speed until it’s thick and creamy, which should take about 2-3 minutes. Remember to set aside 4 tablespoons of this whipped mixture for topping your mousse later.

Add cocoa powder

Sift the cocoa powder over your whipped coconut cream mixture to avoid clumps and mix again with your electric mixer until smooth. This will give your mousse that rich chocolate flavor.

Serve and garnish

Spoon the mousse into small bowls. Use the coconut whipped cream you set aside to top each serving. Add a sprinkle of vegan chocolate shavings and, if you like, some berries for a fresh, fruity contrast.

Recipe Notes and Expert Tips

Making chocolate coconut mousse is pretty straightforward, but here are a few tips to make sure it turns out perfect every time:

  • Chill your coconut milk: For the best texture, make sure your coconut milk is refrigerated for at least 4 hours before you start. This helps the cream separate and solidify, making it easier to whip.
  • Chill your bowl and whisk: An extra step but it guarantees great results! I put my stand mixer bowl and whisk into the fridge along with the can of coconut milk.
  • Quality matters: Use high-quality cocoa powder and vanilla extract for the best flavor. The better the ingredients, the tastier your mousse will be.
  • Adjust sweetness: Feel free to adjust the amount of powdered sugar based on your taste.
  • Powdered sugar alternatives: You can use sugar-free powdered sugar alternative, or other natural sweeteners like maple syrup or agave nectar. Start with a small amount and adjust to taste, as they may alter the texture slightly.
  • Topping ideas: Get creative with toppings! Fresh berries, nuts, coconut flakes, or even a pinch of salt can add interesting textures and flavors.
  • Serving suggestion: For an elegant touch, serve the mousse in wine glasses or small jars. It makes the dessert look as good as it tastes.
  • Keep it chilled: If not serving immediately, keep the mousse refrigerated. It helps maintain its texture and keeps it cool and refreshing.
  • Can I make this mousse without a stand mixer? Absolutely! A hand mixer will work just fine, or you can even do it by hand with a whisk if you’re up for a little workout.
  • Other flavors: Feel free to experiment with almond extract, peppermint extract, or even orange zest to give your mousse a unique twist.
  • How can I make this mousse even more chocolatey? For an intense chocolate flavor, you can melt some vegan dark chocolate and fold it into the mixture once it’s cooled down a bit.

How to Store Leftover Vegan Chocolate Mousse

Got some mousse left over? No problem! Here’s how to keep it tasting delicious:

  • Refrigerate immediately: Store any unused mousse in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will keep well for up to 5 days.
  • Avoid freezing: While freezing can extend its life, it may affect the texture of the mousse. It’s best enjoyed fresh from the fridge.
  • Give it a stir: Before serving again, you might notice some separation. Simply give it a quick stir or whip to bring back its creamy texture.
  • Serve chilled: This mousse tastes best when cold, so take it out of the fridge just before serving.

What to Serve with Chocolate Coconut Mousse

Pairing your vegan chocolate mousse with the right accompaniments can turn it into an even more delightful treat. Here are some of my favorite suggestions:

Fresh Fruit

A topping of fresh fruit not only adds a pop of color but also introduces a refreshing contrast to the rich chocolate flavor. Berries, such as strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries, work beautifully. The acidity and sweetness of the fruit cut through the richness of the mousse, making each bite perfectly balanced. Sliced banana is also a favorite, for something a little sweeter.

Crunchy Toppings

For a bit of texture, try adding some crunchy elements to your mousse. Toasted nuts, coconut flakes, or even a sprinkle of granola can add an enjoyable crunch that contrasts the smoothness of the mousse. These toppings also introduce a variety of flavors that complement the chocolate.

Vegan Cookies or Biscuits

Serving your mousse with a side of vegan cookies or biscuits can turn it into a more substantial dessert. Choose flavors that complement chocolate, such as biscoff, vanilla, peanut butter, almond, or even mint for a refreshing twist. The cookies can be dipped into the mousse or crumbled on top for an added texture.
