vegan chocolate salami

If you’ve never enjoyed a chocolate salami before, it’s essentially a decadent mixture of melted dark chocolate, crushed cookies/biscuits, and any other add-ins that you enjoy most, such as coffee powder, nuts, and fruit.

This no-bake chocolate salami is incredibly easy and quick to make – suitable to a vegan diet, and it can also be varied in numerous ways!

Where Does the Dark Chocolate Salami Log Originate?

It’s hard to say exactly where the recipe for chocolate salami originated from although it seems to be extremely popular in both Portugal and Italy and across Europe.

In Portugal, this chocolate salami (otherwise known as salame de chocolate), is enjoyed as a decadent tea time treat while in Italy it’s enjoyed with coffee and is particularly popular around Christmas.

It’s typically made with butter and eggs, making it distinctly un-vegan. But this easy chocolate salami recipe pares things down and does away with the need for these extra animal-origin ingredients.

What You’ll Need

As you can see below, the ingredients list for this eggless chocolate salami is very short! You’ll just need some good dark chocolate, some plain vegan cookies, and a couple of pantry staples.

How to Make Chocolate Salami

Break up your vegan cookies/biscuits into chunks. You don’t want them to turn to powder, so it’s best to do this by hand.

Pop them onto a dry cloth, fold the cloth around the cookies, and and crush them by applying pressure with your hands.

Put the cookies aside, and move onto the chocolate mixture.

Melt your dark chocolate over low heat using a double boiler, so that it doesn’t burn.

Once the chocolate has melted, remove it from the heat and add your soy milk (or any plant-based milk you like), and the vegetable oil, coffee powder, and a pinch of salt. Mix it well to combine.

Then fold in the broken cookies/biscuits.

Before the chocolate mixture has had a chance to cool, pour it out onto a sheet of baking paper, and roll it with your hands into a log shape.

You can twist the paper at the ends, like a candy bar. Then let it set in the freezer for at least 3 hours.

Once it has hardened, take it out of the freezer, and remove the baking paper (at this point, you can roll it in icing sugar if you like).

Serve the chocolate salami in slices, just like a real salami.

How to Store No-Bake Chocolate Salami

Store leftover dark chocolate salami log, wrapped with parchment paper, in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5-6 days.

This chocolate salami also stores very well in the freezer for 2-4 weeks. Allow it to thaw in the refrigerator prior to serving.

Variations to this Recipe for Chocolate Salami

  • The coffee powder is great for elevating the chocolate flavor in this easy chocolate salami although it can be omitted if you plan on serving this to children or just don’t enjoy coffee in treats.
  • You could also replace the coffee with a little vanilla, almond, or orange essence if you prefer.
  • While I’ve used vegetable oil in this recipe, you can also use another flavorless oil such as canola oil.
  • Feel free to use a sweeter vegan chocolate for a sweeter chocolate salami
  • Nuts and fruit are a delicious way to vary your dark chocolate salami. Consider cherries, raisins, almonds, or even coconut! This allows you to personalise it, if you’re making it as a gift.
  • For a gluten-free vegan chocolate salami, make sure to use gluten-free biscuits such as these oat grahams.

Tips for Making Portuguese Chocolate Salami

  • This vegan chocolate salami would make a scrumptious Christmas homemade edible gift. Wrap it in parchment paper and tie the ends with ribbon and attach a gift tag.
  • Your dairy-free chocolate salami will always be easiest to slice if it’s slightly hardened from freezer storage. It’s also a good idea to use a sharp knife.
  • Rolling the chocolate salami roll in powdered sugar just prior to serving adds a little bit of extra sweetness. This can be omitted if you like but certainly adds an interesting element to this treat, it makes it feel extra festive too!
  • Serve this eggless chocolate salami with a hot mug of coffee or tea. It’s perfect as a sweet treat or snack like you’d enjoy a decadent cookie.
