Vegan jackfruit buffalo dip

An oldie but a goodie, I’ve been making this delicious jackfruit buffalo ‘chicken’ dip for years, and it just keeps on getting better.

It’s the ideal treat to serve at parties, too. But be warned, you may have to make two – it’s that good!

Ok, so it’s not the healthiest snack around, but we believe in eating in moderation. And the occasional indulgence is just good for the soul, don’t you think?

This vegan buffalo recipe is easy to throw together in just one pan, takes only 15 mins to prep, and can be served alongside a variety of dipping sticks and snacks.

Hold up, What’s Jackfruit?

If you haven’t heard of jackfruit yet, you’re in for a treat. This unassuming looking fruit makes an excellent meat replacement, and it has a similar texture to cooked chicken or pork.

Wait a minute, a fruit as a meat replacement?

Yep, you heard right. Jackfruit is a tree fruit in the same family as figs, and is grown in Southeast Asia, Brazil, and Africa. When it’s young, it has a neutral taste, so the flesh of the fruit soaks up the sauces or spices you cook it with.

It’s not an amazing source of protein unlike some other meat replacements, but it’s low calorie, and is packed with other nutrients such as Magnesium, Potassium, Vitamin A, C, and antioxidants.

How to cook with Jackfruit

Jackfruit is normally sold in cans and you can often find it in organic stores, Asian groceries, or online.

Before cooking it, you’ll need to drain and rinse the jackfruit. Then you can chop off the core (the hard bit) of the fruit, as it doesn’t shred and is tough to eat.

In this recipe, we’ll then cook it in a little buffalo sauce to give the jackfruit a beautiful taste and texture before we add it to the dip.

How to Make Vegan Buffalo Dip

You may think buffalo dip would be a nightmare to vegan-ize, what with all the cheese, cream and chicken, but it’s actually super easy – especially if you use vegan replacements for traditional ingredients like we have. Let’s start with the sauce.

Vegan Buffalo Sauce

Buffalo sauce is most commonly made with butter, so it’s safe to say that the regular version is a no-go if you’re following a vegan diet.

Luckily, it’s easy to make yourself, using vegan butter and Worcestershire sauce (did you know regular Worcestershire sauce has anchovies?!)

You’ll need:

  • Hot sauce
  • Vegan butter
  • Chili powder
  • Vegan Worcestershire sauce
  • Garlic salt

And it’s as simple as throwing it all in a pan, and gently heating it while you stir to combine.

Jackfruit Buffalo Dip Ingredients

To make the dip, you’ll only need 6 ingredients.

  • Jackfruit
  • Buffalo sauce
  • Vegan cream cheese
  • Vegan ranch
  • Celery
  • Vegan cheese shreds

To Make the Vegan Buffalo Jackfruit Dip

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C)

Drain the jackfruit and rinse it well.

Chop the jackfruit off the core, and discard the core pieces.

Shred the flesh of the jackfruit with your hands.

Place the shredded jackfruit and 4 tbsp of buffalo sauce into a large skillet and heat until the jackfruit starts to become a little crispy.

Add the rest of the ingredients into a bowl and stir to combine. Add the jackfruit to the mix and transfer to an oven dish – or back into the skillet if using an ovenproof skillet.

Bake for 25 minutes.

Add extra cheese shreds (for extra cheesy-factor) as soon as you take it out of the oven and they’ll melt with the heat of the dish.

Let cool for at least 15 minutes before digging in.

How to Serve Your Plant Based Buffalo Dip

Serve your vegan buffalo dip right from the pan with melted vegan cheese on top, or spoon it into a smaller bowl and top with extra buffalo sauce, ranch, or a little fresh dill.

Serve with fresh vegetable sticks, crackers, tortilla chips, pita bread, or fresh or toasted bread.

What to do with any leftovers

First up, it’s highly unlikely this buffalo jackfruit dip doesn’t get gobbled up in one sitting.

But if you make too much, or you’re making it for one, you can store leftovers in the fridge and use it as a spread for sandwiches, wraps, or even toasted sandwiches!
